The Washington Commanders (2-2) return home to open up Week 5 play by hosting the Chicago Bears (0-4) on Thursday night. The Commanders come into this matchup off of an emotional overtime loss to their division rival Philadelphia Eagles. The Commanders’ offense performed very well despite the loss. The Bears lost in Week 4 after leading the Broncos 28 to 7 in the late third quarter. The Bears have yet to win a game in 2023.

Main Storylines to Watch

What can go wrong for the Commanders? Washington played very well in Week 4 against the Eagles on the road. The offense moved the ball through the air and ground pretty efficiently and they forced an undefeated team to go into overtime before eventually losing. Week 4 was an overtime loss to an undefeated team and now they have a winless team at home in Week 5. The Commanders are an up and down team, but they are the better team in this matchup. Hopefully for Commanders fans, this will be a stress-free home win.

Has Justin Fields learned to run a passing offense or do the Broncos just stink? Fields has been abysmal in the passing game all season until he went off through the air against Denver in their Week 4 matchup. Fields was drafted high in fantasy for his rushing ability. If Fields can put both together, he is an absolute stud for fantasy and this Bears team will start putting up more points and maybe even win more games.

The Philadelphia Eagles (3-0) are at home to host the Washington Commanders (2-1) in their first meeting of the year. The Eagles come into this matchup on a short week after their Monday night victory over the previously undefeated Buccaneers. After going into Week 3 undefeated, the Washington Commanders got waxed at home against the Buffalo Bills.

Main Storylines to Watch

Can the Eagles and Jalen Hurts get revenge on their 2022 loss to the Commanders? Jalen Hurts has won 20 out of the last 21 games when starting in the regular season. That one loss came in their home contest last season against the Commanders. The Eagles will look to rebound against the Commanders and stay undefeated on the year.

Where do the Commanders belong in the league hierarchy? The Commanders opened this year with all sunshine and rainbows beating the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos. Despite the Cardinals’ win over Dallas last week, both of these teams are bottom five in the league. The first real test the Commanders faced, they got absolutely destroyed at home. Seeing how the Commanders respond against their divisional rival will be very telling for how we treat this team for the rest of the season.

The Buffalo Bills (1-1) travel south for their Week 3 contest against the Washington Commanders (2-0). The Commanders managed a second-half comeback in Denver last week to beat the Broncos and stay undefeated on the year.  The Bills bounced back from their Week 1 loss to blow out the Las Vegas Raiders at home.

Main Storylines to Watch

How do the Commanders look against a championship-contending team? The Commanders are 2-0 after beating two below-average teams at best. This is the Commanders’ first test against a top-five championship-contending team. The Commanders have two title hopefuls in their division, so this is a perfect test to see how seriously we need to take this undefeated Washington team.

Do the Bills finally have a trustworthy run game? The Bills rushed for 97 yards in Week 1 against a stout Jets defense, but they responded in Week 2 with 183 yards on the ground led by James Cook who rushed for 123 yards on 17 carries. The Bills have lacked a solid rush game in the past two years forcing Josh Allen to do everything for this offense. If this result in Week 2 was not a fluke, the Bills have suddenly become an immensely more balanced offense.

The Denver Broncos (0-1) stay home to host the Washington Commanders (1-0). The Broncos lost by one in Week 1 in a sloppy contest against their division rivals the Las Vegas Raiders. The Commanders came back in the fourth quarter to beat the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1.

Writer’s Record
Leans: 0-4 down 4u
Bets: 2-2 up 0.25u

Main Storylines to Watch

Is this Broncos offense capable of putting up enough points with Russell Wilson leading the charge? The Broncos only put up 16 points in their Week 1 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. This looks very similar to last year’s team where the defense held up their end of the bargain, but the offense could not do enough to win games. Sean Payton came in to fix these issues, but after Week 1, this may have been a more difficult job than people realized.

How do the Commanders look against a team not expected to get the number one overall pick? The Commanders needed a comeback in the fourth quarter to beat the team with the lowest number of projected wins according to Vegas. How will the Commanders look against an average team? This Broncos matchup is a good test to learn more about how Washington will look for the rest of the year.

Cardinals(+260) @ Commanders(-325): O/U 38.0
Commanders -7.0 (-110), Cardinals +7.0(-110)

The Washington Commanders open their season at home as heavy favorites against the Arizona Cardinals. The Commanders start another season with a new starting quarterback in Sam Howell. Howell is surrounded by a solid group of offensive weapons and a new offensive coordinator in Eric Bieniemy. The Cardinals open their season with major question marks on whether they are even attempting to compete this season.

Main Storylines to Watch

How does the Commanders’ offense look under Eric Bieniemy? Eric Bieniemy has had a ton of success as Kansas City Chief’s offensive coordinator under head coach Andy Reid and all-pro QB Patrick Mahomes. Bieniemy is on his own now and it should be interesting to see how this offense is run without an all-pro, future hall-of-fame quarterback. The new offense will be centered around second-year quarterback Sam Howell. If Howell can get the ball out quickly to all of his offensive weapons, this offense could surprise many.

Will the Cardinals have a fantasy-relevant offense? Kyler Murray is out for at least four games as he recovers from last season’s knee injury. Instead of keeping veteran QB Colt McCoy, the Cardinals opted to start the year with veteran, journeyman Joshua Dobbs and rookie Clayton Tune as the quarterback options. Deandre Hopkins was traded this offseason leaving Marquise Brown and Rondale Moore as the projected target leaders in the receiving game. James Conner has been a solid option in past years, but if the offense sputters behind poor quarterback play, Conner’s scoring opportunities could be few and far between.
